The feeling of having both feet off the ground and moving at high speed through the air. This is extremely difficult to learn from a textbook, but once you get on an airplane, it instantly becomes clear. What will change when you can go "in" to your avatar that is located far away, possibly even outside of the Earth? What kind of new opportunities will be available to us? The technology to enable the transmission of presence that avatarin is developing is also difficult to describe in words, but once you experience it, you will be able to understand it immediately. This new capability will expand our human potential and when made available to people all over the world through the experiences provided by avatarin, I believe a new future for humanity will be within our reach.

M.D., University of Tsukuba, 1996. Ph.D., Medicine, University of Tokyo, 2006. D. in Medicine. After completing his residency in cardiovascular surgery at the University of Tsukuba, he began research in regenerative medicine, which he combined with data science at Stanford University in the U.S. He has been with RIKEN since 2004.
Currently, he is a team leader of the Medical Data Deep Learning Team, Advanced Data Science Project, Information R&D and Strategy Headquarters, RIKEN.
